This is a rant from PHonePHriendly.Com Webmaster Ozzie Osband, replying to a question on "Why make web sites just for phones?"

How many columns are on your original web page? How many "gestures" will it take to start reading your Content? How much "eye candy" will get in the way of reading that content that the visitor came for?

Mobile users are someplace where they want the information NOW because they want to USE the information NOW. They have stopped dead in their tracks to look up something, pulled out their phone, and they've gotten to YOUR mobile web site. Now what? The "back" button is right there to try the next search engine "hit" if your site is too hard to maneuver.

Clear away the junk, use only a single column, and make the user a separate Mobile web site. Don't assume an iPhone or Android phone - those folks will "have an App for that". Assume a simple phone browser without a lot of smarts, and (if you're lucky) will at least respond to AccessKey tags.

Remember, just the important stuff. On one page, I put information first, THEN give you a menu. Why would you go to a site called Space Launch Info in the first place?

Ready.Mobi always chides me for the ISMAP used on the graphic of the "* 0 #" keys, but THAT is what I do for the touchscreen crowd that doesn't have physical keys.
